This literature review provides a systematic investigation on how the social inclusion of adults with disability is conceptualized in research concerned with policy and service provision in Australia. The review summarizes the literature, and clarifies its relative strengths and weaknesses, by grouping into recurring themes, namely: de-institutionalization, the changing nature of the disability services, different forms of ‘community engagement’, and socially valued roles, particularly in the realm of employment, volunteering, and consumer transactions. Several gaps emerge in the literature. Authors build on the findings to make recommendations for policy, practice, and for further research.
