This review is limited to women with physical disabilities for a number of reasons, most notably the reality that there is scant data on the perinatal care experiences and outcomes of women with developmental or cognitive disabilities. In this review, the authors outline a number of barriers that women with physical disabilities commonly report encountering during the perinatal period. In an effort to improve perinatal care experiences and ultimately maternal and infant outcomes, I conclude this review with recommendations to address the barriers identified.
